Comedian Nimesh Patel was kicked off stage at Columbia University’s “cultureSHOCK: Reclaim” event for humor deemed to be out of bounds for what the organizers describe as a “space for inclusion and acceptance.”
During the event, Patel’s performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City—including a joke about a gay, black man in his neighborhood—which AAA officials deemed inappropriate. Patel joked that being gay cannot be a choice because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.’”
For the irony-impaired, the premise is that blacks and gays are unfairly discriminated against. Is it hacky? Yeah, it’s been done before. But it’s also pretty much the opposite of bigoted humor.
